This article talks about pinning and unpinning items, so you can keep the 'clutter' to the minimum. Pinning and unpinning is done in two places:
Pin and unpin items in the left-hand most column
To do this, you need to be in the Preferences box. Use either of the two options below to get there.
Option 1: 
In the left-hand most column, click on Customize Menu. | Option 2:

The Preferences box will pop up.
Choose Customize Menu.
REMINDER: This customization refers to the Top Menu and the Bottom Menu
in the FIRST column (most left-hand column).
 | +Create New is always displayed.
Then there is the TOP MENU to the line.
After the line to your Thumbnail is the bottom menu |
Pin / unpin the items you want to see.
NOTE: Even though you may pin Gifts, you will only see this item if you have a pending gift.
Where do the unpinned items from the left-hand most column go?
In the image above, we have unpinned several items in the top menu (Tags, Web Widgets, ShortCode Keywords, Templates, QR Code). We have also unpinned two items in the bottom menu (Gifts, Earn Money).

Pin and unpin items in the second column
| The categories Messages, Text, Voice, People, and Groups have second columns. |

| Pinned or unpinned?Hover over an item. If a pin appears, this category is pinned. |
| To unpin an item, click on the pin. The item disappears.
Notice that there is now a Hidden category at the bottom of the column (yellow box in image to the left). Favorites is there because we have unpinned it. |
| To re-pin an item, hover over it. Click on the pin. The item will be pinned once again. |
